“World War II: in our Words” – a three-part documentary of San Antonioans telling their war stories – now has a war story of its own. Telly Award judges gave the documentary three, bronze Telly Awards, one for each hour-long episode.

“It was the stories that won the awards,” said Lee Dunkelberg, producer of “WWII: In Our Words”. KLRN contracted with Mr. Dunkelberg to produce the series that ran in conjunction with the epic Ken Burns’ documentary, “The War”. “It was an honor working with KLRN and can’t thank people enough for coming forward with their stories.”

Historically, Bronze Telly Award Winners typically have represented about 18 to 25% of the more than 14,000 entrants from the United States and foreign countries. It is second only to the Silver Telly Award.

Mr. Dunkelberg's work now has won six Telly Awards - one silver and five bronze.

Founded in 1979, the Telly Awards is the premier award honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, the finest film and video productions, and groundbreaking web commercials, videos and films. Winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world.

“In about six months, we interviewed more than 70 persons and put their stories into three hours of quality programming,” said Mr. Dunkelberg. “Some were telling stories they never had told before. Interviews often ended with everyone on the set teared up.

“Speaking of the tapings, the whole project was a great team effort from everyone, especially Tara Walters who spent hours on editing the pieces.”

With nearly 11,000 entries from all 50 states and around the world, organizers say this year’s 30th anniversary has been one of the most competitive and successful in the long history of the Telly Awards.

KLRN Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Charles Vaughn and then Production Director Roy Flores oversaw the project. Tara Walter edited the piece. Randy Allee and Sergio Gonzales handled sound and photography respectively, with Brian Alley handling new media support. Macy McBeth, Jessica Gomez and Alex DeHoya provided support, while Ellen Evans, Katrina Kehoe and Jack Morgan handled promotion and publicity.

This year's Winners include companies, agencies and organizations of all sizes, from large multinational media companies to small ad agencies and local production houses. A sample of Silver Telly Winners includes AEG Network LIVE, American Cancer Society, Bass Pro Shops, Booz Allen Hamilton, BrabenderCox, Colonial Williamsburg Productions, Cox Communications, DDB, Discovery Communications, Evans & Sutherland, Fox Soccer Channel, Grey NYC, GSD&M Idea City, Harpo Productions, HBO Latin America, IBM Digital Video Services, JWT BOOM, Keller Crescent Advertising, Laszlo Rain, Maguire Reeder, Ltd., Mercury Multimedia, Inc., Miami Dolphins, Microsoft, NBC Universal, New York Jets, NFL Films, Nickelodeon, Outdoor Channel, Penn College, Radio Television Hong Kong, Ruder Finn, Salon Films (HK) Ltd., Sony Pictures, Suddenlink, TBWA/Chiat/Day Los Angeles, The Inspiration Networks, TV Guide Network, Warner Bros., Young & Rubicam.
